Wat drijft ons, waar schuurt het en hoe beïnvloedt dat ons werk in de praktijk? Op deze hands-on dag bouwen we voort op eerdere edities met thema’s als solidariteit en gedeelde belangen in circusprogrammering. Artiest Bram Dobbelaere deelt zijn persoonlijk verhaal, we worden meegenomen in een artistieke interventie van Jean-Baptiste Thevenod en we werken met interactieve en speelse gespreksvormen die gebaseerd zijn op eigen ervaringen in het veld. Samen ontrafelen we hoe uitgesproken én onuitgesproken verwachtingen en intenties doorwerken in het maken, tonen, presenteren en ontvangen van circus.
We nodigen je niet alleen uit om te luisteren en te kijken, maar ook om te bewegen, soms letterlijk, soms mentaal. Je kiest positie, stelt vragen, deelt twijfels en laat inzichten ontstaan. We gaan verder in een gesprek dat we als sector al langer voeren en proberen dit om te zetten in concrete resultaten. Met A Day at the Circus onderzoeken we de sector en onze eigen rol erin. Een dag voor programmeurs, makers, artiesten, producenten, marketeers, technici, journalisten en andere cultuurprofessionals.

• Keynote: Bram Dobbelaere (artiest, jongleur, regisseur, coach én meubelmaker) brengt zijn persoonlijke verhaal over 25 jaar toewijding, vakmanschap en het managen van verwachtingen in de circussector.
• Verschillende dynamische sessies waarin we 4 onderwerpen verdiepen: de vlotte of juist stroeve wisselwerking tussen artiesten & speelplekken (1), tussen artiesten & publiek (2), vraagstukken rond solidariteit in de groeiende sector (3) en over de betekenis van partnerschappen en coproducties in de praktijk (4).

14:30 Keuze tussen twee verdiepende sessies:
• De kunst van het vragen. In deze speelse gespreksvorm houdt één enkele vraag het gesprek gaande, ook wanneer de gesprekspartners wisselen. Deze dynamische methode brengt frisse inzichten en onverwachte invalshoeken.
• Circles of Circus. In een actieve brainstormsessie rond solidariteit wordt onderzocht hoe een deelplatform in de circussector eruit zou kunnen zien en hoe delen en samenwerken een duurzame vorm kan krijgen: Waar heb jij iets te brengen? Waar zoek je iets? Waar kunnen we elkaar vinden?

Host, schrijver en spoken word-artiest Lin An Phoa, begeleidt ons door de dag. En er is gedurende de dag ruimte om vraag en aanbod zichtbaar te maken: kennis, ervaring, ideeën, concrete hulp of middelen.

Come discover new perspectives and inspire the circusfield in the Netherlands! On Tuesday, January 27, from 10:00 to 17:30, circus and cultural professionals will gather for the fifth time at Theater Bellevue for A Day at the Circus, an initiative by TENT and Circuspunt. This edition focuses on Intentions & Expectations. You are warmly invited!
What drives us, where does it rub, and how does that shape our work in practice? During this hands-on day, we build on previous editions that focused on themes such as solidarity and shared interests in circus programming. Artist Bram Dobbelaere shares his personal story, we are drawn into an artistic intervention by Jean-Baptiste Thevenod, and we work with interactive and playful dialogue formats grounded in our own experiences in the field. Together, we unravel how both spoken and unspoken intentions and expectations influence the making, showing, presenting, and receiving of circus.
We invite you not only to listen and observe, but also to move, sometimes literally, sometimes mentally. You take a position, ask questions, share doubts, and allow insights to emerge. We continue a conversation that has been ongoing within the sector for some time and work towards translating it into concrete outcomes. With A Day at the Circus, we explore both the sector and our own roles within it. A day for programmers, makers, artists, producers, marketers, technicians, journalists, and other cultural professionals.

• Keynote: Bram Dobbelaere (artist, juggler, director, coach and furniture maker) shares his personal story about 25 years of dedication, craftsmanship and managing expectations in the circus sector.
• A series of dynamic sessions in which we dive deeper into four topics: the smooth or difficult interaction between artists and venues (1), between artists and audiences (2), issues surrounding solidarity in a growing sector (3), and the significance of partnerships and co-productions in practice (4).

14:30 Choice between two in-depth sessions:
• The art of asking questions. In this playful form of conversation, a single question keeps the conversation going, even when the conversation partners change. This dynamic method brings fresh insights and unexpected perspectives.
• Circles of Circus. In an active brainstorming session on solidarity, we will explore what a sharing platform in the circus sector could look like and how sharing and collaboration can be made sustainable: What do you have to offer? What are you looking for? Where can we find each other?
