Het museum van de 21e eeuw: een plek waar culturen elkaar ontmoeten? Een dialoog tussen museumprofessionals uit Europa en de Arabische wereld.

Musea over de hele wereld worstelen om meer cultureel divers te worden wat betreft bezoekers, programma's en tentoonstellingen tot aan de staf en het bestuur van de musea en culturele organisaties zelf. Hoe gaan museumprofessionals om met deze worsteling? En hoe kunnen musea bruggen slaan binnen eigen samenleving en internationaal?

Een interessant voorbeeld is The Louvre Abu Dhabi, dat eind 2017 voor het eerst haar deuren opende. Het museum had als doel een echt 'universeel museum' te zijn - een term die verwijst naar beroemde musea die collecties kunst en culturele objecten bezitten van over de hele wereld. Dit is geen uniek fenomeen. Meerdere Westerse musea vertakken zich in het Midden-Oosten. Tegelijkertijd zien we ook een toenemende belangstelling voor tentoonstellingen met kunst uit de Arabische wereld in Europa, bijvoorbeeld als we kijken naar het Institute du monde arabe in Parijs. Kunnen we spreken van een gelijkwaardige culturele uitwisseling tussen Europa en de Arabische wereld, waardoor er meer wederzijds begrip ontstaat tussen beide delen van de wereld?

We zullen deze ontwikkelingen onderzoeken tijdens een culturele uitwisseling, met culturele professionals uit zowel Europa als de Arabische wereld. Deelnemers zijn onder andere:

Salama Al Shamsi - Senior Project Manager bij Zayed National Museum op Department of Culture and Tourism
Achim Borchardt-Hume – Hoofd tentoonstellingen, Tate Modern
Hissa Al Dhaheri - Adjunct-directeur, Louvre Abu Dhabi
Wim Pijbes – voormalig directeur Rijksmuseum & huidig directeur Stichting Droom & Daad

Als een onderdeel van een culturele uitwisseling tussen Europa en de Arabische wereld organiseren wij ook het programma Bridging cultures, bridging societies.

De voertaal van dit programma is Engels.

Dit programma is een onderdeel van de tweede editie van het Forum on European Culture: “Act for Democracy!”. Waar de toekomst van Europa steeds onzekerder lijkt, brengen wij vooraanstaande artiesten, filosofen, economen en politici bijeen tijdens een 4-daagse interdisciplinair programma om Europa en haar toekomst te bespreken.

How can museums build bridges both within and beyond societies?

Museums over the world struggle to become more culturally diverse ranging from their visitors, programmes and exhibitions, to the management teams of museums and cultural organizations. How do museum professionals deal with this struggle? And how can museums build bridges both within and beyond societies?
An interesting example is The Louvre Abu Dhabi, which opened its doors for the first time at the end of 2017. The museum aimed at being a true ‘universal museum’ – a term that refers to famous museums with collections of art and cultural items from around the world. This is not a unique phenomenon. Western museums are increasingly looking to branch out to the Middle East. At the same time we also see an increasing interest in exhibitions with art from the Arab world in Europe, for example if we look at the Institute du monde arabe in Paris. Can we speak of an equal cultural exchange between Europe and the Arab world, which creates a greater mutual understanding between both parts of the world?

We will investigate these developments during a true cultural exchange, with cultural professionals both from Europe and the Arab World. Participants are amongst others:
