De verkiezingen voor het Europees Parlement laten zien dat de jongste generatie kiezers de stembus het minst opzoekt. Een waarschuwing voor democratische legitimiteit van de EU: zij lijken zich in het hedendaagse Europa niet voldoende vertegenwoordigd te voelen. Hoog tijd dus om de jongere generatie aan het woord te laten en hun eigen toekomst in Europa te bespreken. De toekomst van Europa ligt immers in hun handen!

Ter gelegenheid van de verkiezing van de nieuwe Jongerenvertegenwoordiger Europese Zaken voor de Nationale Jeugdraad, organiseert het Forum on European Culture samen met IDEA (International Debate Education Association) en de Nationale Jeugdraad een debat over het huidige Europa, met 50 jongeren uit allerlei achtergronden en hoeken van het land.

De jonge debaters zullen, in teamverband drie stellingen bediscussiëren: Hoe ervaren zij hun vrijheid van bewegen in Europa? Hoe Europees voelen ze zich eigenlijk? En wat kan er veranderd worden in hun vertegenwoordiging op Europees niveau? De drie stellingen worden geïntroduceerd door de drie kandidaten voor Jeugdvertegenwoordiger Europese Zaken. De beste teams en individuele debaters worden beloond met een prijs, niet alleen voor spreekvaardigheid, maar ook voor hun originaliteit en luisterend vermogen.


De voertaal van dit programma is Nederlands.

Dit programma is een onderdeel van de tweede editie van het Forum on European Culture. Waar de toekomst van Europa steeds onzekerder lijkt, brengen wij vooraanstaande artiesten, filosofen, economen en politici bijeen tijdens een 4-daagse interdisciplinair programma om Europa en de Europese cultuur te bespreken en een gezamenlijke Europese toekomst voor te stellen. Het thema van dit jaar is: “Act for Democracy!”.

Europe 2018 – Youth Debate

When you look at past European Parliamentary election results, it becomes clear that the youngest generation of voters are the least likely to vote . This is a warning against the democratic validity of the EU: young voters do not feel represented in present-day Europe. It’s high time we give the floor to a younger generation so they can address how they envisage the future of Europe. After all, the future of Europe is in their hands.

In light of the election of the new Youth Representative European Affairs for the National Youth Council, IDEA (International Debate Education Association) and the National Youth Council are joining forces with the Forum on European Culture. They will organise a debate on the current state of Europe with 50 young people from all backgrounds and corners of the country.

In teams, they will debate three statements: how do they experience their freedom of movement in Europe? How European do they actually feel? And how can they be represented better on the European level? All statements will be introduced by the three candidates, who are in the running for the post of Youth Representative European Affairs. The best teams and individual debaters are awarded with a prize, not only for speaking skills, but also for originality and listening skills.

This programme is a part of the second edition of the Forum on European Culture: “Act for Democracy!”. At a time when the future of Europe is more uncertain than ever before, we bring together leading and inspiring artists, thinkers, economists and politicians during a 4-day interdisciplinary programme to discuss Europe and its future.
