Tijdens A Day at the circus brengen we programmeurs, marketeers, technici, producenten, journalisten en circus professionals bijeen rond prangende vragen die de wasdom van het Nederlands circus dwars zitten. Zo heeft het imago van circus nog steeds te lijden onder stereotypering of loopt circus in de representatie van etnische diversiteit op het podium nog achter. En tussen de wens tot programmering en de daadwerkelijke presentatie, liggen ook nog flink wat technische en productionele uitdagingen die het circus eigen is.
Na een succesvolle eerste editie in 2021 zetten we vanuit Circuspunt & TENT het inhoudelijk gesprek tussen het brede culturele veld en het circusveld verder. We onderzoeken en bespreken hoe we het publiek kunnen bereiken; we informeren het brede veld uit andere disciplines over de ontwikkelingen in het Nederlandse circus; en bevorderen de onderlinge kennismaking tussen deze doelgroepen. Met vereende krachten brengen we circus verder tot wasdom.
Programma
10:00 - Inloop & koffie
10:30 - Opening door de host (Maaike Muis ), Circuspunt (Marc Eysink Smeets), TENT (Rosa Boon) en Theater Bellevue (Eve Hopkins).
11:00 - Keynotes van onder meer Cahit Metin (Circusproducent & -technicus), Thabi Mooi (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion expert) en een optreden van circus studenten van Codarts Circusarts (Karin & Hedvig Brodén).
12:00 - Lunch De Smoeshaan (incl. lunch en twee consumptiebonnen).
14:00 - Diverse workshops over productionele & technische uitdagingen voor podia en bespelers (Mirjam Zwanenburg, Korzo), schrijven over en dealen met het imago van circus (Annette Embrechts, freelance criticus bij de Volkskrant) en Astrid Elburg over de representatie van etnische diversiteit.
15:45 - Koffie Pauze
16:00 - Afsluiting & optreden van circusmaker Hendrik Van Maele en Eliot de Haspe

Talks, performances, and hands-on labs for professionals. Circus is doing well. Years of investment in the discipline are paying off, the Dutch contemporary circus is on its way to maturity. But the road towards it is full of bumps and challenges. How do we make circus possible on even more stages? And how can we further encourage audience interest?

14:00 - Various workshops on production & technical challenges for stages and performers (Mirjam Zwanenburg, Korzo), writing about and dealing with the image of circus (Annette Embrechts, freelance critic at de Volkskrant) and on the representation of ethnic diversity.

During A Day at the circus, we bring together programmers, marketers, technicians, producers, journalists, and circus professionals around the key questions that bother the maturity of Dutch circus. For instance, the image of circus still suffers from stereotyping or circus still tends to be underperforming in the representation of ethnic diversity on stage. And between the desire for programming and the actual presentation, there are also quite a few technical and production challenges inherent to circus.
After a successful first edition in 2021, we from Circuspunt & TENT will continue the substantive conversation between the broad cultural field and the field of circus. We investigate and discuss how to reach the audience; we inform the broad field from other disciplines about the developments in Dutch circus; and promote mutual acquaintance between these target groups. Together, we bring circus to maturity.
