The Future is not what it used to be

Choreograaf Pia Meuthen en haar performers maken met The Future is not what it used to be een fysieke en zintuiglijke voorstelling over het mysterie van de tijd. Ze tonen het verlangen van de mens om samenhang te creëren in een gefragmenteerde wereld, om het verleden niet te verliezen, om grip te krijgen op de toekomst en op te gaan in het moment. The Future is not what it used to be is een ode aan het ongewisse en onvoltooide, aan het in wording zijnde en nog niet bepaalde.

Zwevende objecten vormen een surrealistisch en poëtisch universum. Op afgebrokkelde fragmenten, gestold in de tijd, balanceren de performers hoog in de lucht. Elkaar vasthoudend boven de gapende afgrond ontrafelen ze de samenhang tussen tijd en zwaartekracht. Zonder houvast begeven ze zich in het luchtledige. Voorbij alle zekerheden omarmen ze het risico en spelen ze met onze waarneming van de tijd.

Everything is constantly moving. Nothing ever remains the same, even though not every change is visible. We can’t stop the clock. The hours often slip by, but at other times they seem elastic. Mostly, we are afraid of losing time. But does time pass, do the hours exist outside ourselves? With The Future is not what it used to be, choreographer Pia Meuthen and her performers create a physical and sensory performance about the mystery of time. They show the desire of man to create cohesion in a fragmented world, not to lose the past, to get a grip on the future and to merge into the moment. The Future is not what it used to be is an ode to the uncertain and unfinished, to the emerging and not yet determined. Floating objects form a surreal and poetic universe. The performers balance high in the air on crumbled fragments, solidified in time. Holding each other above the gaping abyss, they unravel the relationship between time and gravity and enter the void. Beyond all certainties, they embrace the risk and play with our perception of time. Panama Pictures’ work literally moves up in the air in The Future is not what it used to be. With a movement language that combines strength and vulnerability and evokes a physical sensation. You feel the impact of the movements, the risk is real, something is at stake.
