An immersive experience into the dark

De gedeelde interesse in magie nouvelle, een hedendaagse vorm van magie, bracht Annika Hemmerling, Kolja Huneck en Luuk Brantjes bij elkaar. This is not a circus nodigde hen uit om een late night show te ontwikkelen speciaal voor Klein Bellevue. In een compacte creatieperiode ontstond Hold on light, een immersieve ervaring naar het donker. Zij nemen het publiek mee naar een plek waar verschillende realiteiten bestaan en routines, wetten en fysica langzaam uit elkaar lijken te vallen. De voorstelling biedt een intieme blik in een universum dat 's nachts tot leven komt.

Wat gebeurt er op een podium nadat de show is afgelopen? Als het applaus uitdooft, de bar sluit en de technici de deur dichtslaan. Dan gaat de spot uit en het ghostlight aan. Daar, in de donkere krochten van Klein Bellevue, verenigen drie circusartiesten de uitersten van hun circuspraktijken.

De in Berlijn geboren Annika Hemmerling, heeft een voorliefde voor obscure persoonlijkheden en absurde humor. Ze is gespecialiseerd in danstrapeze en mondbalans. Kolja Huneck uit München kennen we onder meer van het collectief Sawdust Symphony. Als objectmanipulator werkt hij met zelf ontwikkelde schijven en vinyl platen. De Nederlandse teeterboard-acrobaat en objectmanipulator Luuk Brantjes legt zich toe op de oneindige mogelijkheden bij de interactie tussen lichaam en object. Hij debuteerde met een zelfontwikkelde mechaniek om teeterboard in zijn eentje uit te voeren. De drie makers waren studiegenoten op Codarts Circusarts in Rotterdam.

Annika Hemmerling, Kolja Huneck and Luuk Brantjes have a shared interest in The shared interest in magic nouvelle, a contemporary form of magic. This is not a circus invited them to develop a late night show just for the festival. In a compact creation period of Hold on light became an immersive experience into the dark, to a place where different realities exist and routines, laws and physics slowly seem to fall apart. The performance offers a partial view into a universe that comes to life at night.

What happens on stage after the show is over? When the applause dies down, the bar closes and the technician shuts the door. Then the spotlight goes out and the ghostlight comes on. There, in the dark recesses of Klein Bellevue, three circus artists unite the extremes of their circus practices.

Berlin-born Annika Hemmerling has a penchant for obscure personalities and absurd humour. She specializes in dance trapeze and mouth balance. We know Kolja Huneck from Munich from the Sawdust Symphony collective. As an object manipulator he works with self-developed discs and vinyl records. The Dutch teeterboard acrobat and object manipulator Luuk Brantjes focuses on the endless possibilities of the interaction between body and object. He debuted a self-developed mechanic to perform teeterboard in his one and only. The three makers were fellow students at Codarts Circusarts in Rotterdam.

Meer over de makers

Kolja Huneck, Annika Hemmerling en Luuk Brantjes ontmoetten elkaar tijdens hun studie aan Codarts Circus Arts in Rotterdam, waar ze in dezelfde klas zaten. Na hun studie bleven ze contact houden en geïnteresseerd in elkaars circuspraktijk, en zo ontstond de samenwerking voor Hang on light. Wat hen alle drie verbindt is een interesse in de hedendaagse vorm van magie die Magie Nouvelle heet.

Kolja Huneck is circusauteur en performer uit München, Duitsland en studeerde in 2019 af aan Codarts Circus Arts in Rotterdam. Momenteel ligt de focus van zijn werk en interesses op contemplatieve circusstukken en alternatieve dramaturgieën die gedachten stimuleren of efemere zintuiglijke indrukken geven. Zijn kenmerkende objecten zijn vinyl platen en zelf ontwikkelde schijven. Hij werkt in het collectief met Sawdust Symphony en toert met zijn solostuk CM_30.

Annika Hemmerling, geboren in Berlijn, studeerde af aan Codarts Circus Arts, gespecialiseerd in danstrapeze en mondbalans. Na haar studie heeft ze gewerkt in zowel solo- als samenwerkingsprojecten zoals Rita en Rita en haar aankomende productie Fantastic Lola. In haar werk heeft ze een voorliefde voor obscure persoonlijkheden en absurde humor. 

Luuk Brantjes is een circusartiest en maker uit Nederland. Tijdens zijn studie richtte hij zich op de discipline teeterboard, met de nadruk op het vinden van nieuwe manieren om de discipline te benaderen. Zijn interesse ligt in de interactie tussen lichaam en object, en de oneindige mogelijkheden die deze combinatie genereert. Hij debuteerde als auteur met zijn solostuk L O N E.

After their studies, they stayed in touch and interested in each other's circus practice, and thus the collaboration for Hang on light was born. What connects all three of them is an interest in the contemporary form of magic called Magie Nouvelle.

Kolja Huneck is circus author and performer from Munich, Germany and graduated in 2019 from Codarts Circus Arts in Rotterdam. Currently, the focus of his work and interests are on contemplative circus pieces and alternative dramaturgies that stimulate thoughts or provide ephemeral sensory impressions. His signature objects are vinyl records and self-developed disks. He is working in the collective with Sawdust Symphony and is touring his solo piece CM_30.

Annika Hemmerling, born in Berlin, graduated from Codarts Circus arts specialized in dance trapeze and mouth balancing. Luuk Brantjes is a circus artist and maker from the Netherlands. During his studies he focussed on the discipline teeterboard, with an emphasis on finding new ways of approaching the discipline. His interest lies in the interaction between body and object, and the infinite possibilities this combination generates. He debuted as an author with his solo piece called L O N E.
