A night of inspiration

Gecureerd en gemodereerd door performer en theatermaker Nick Deroo (hij/hem), combineert A Night of Inspiration het delen van inspiratie met de gezellige atmosfeer van je woonkamer.  

Elke spreker, geselecteerd voor hun originaliteit, passie en uitmuntendheid, dompelt je 15 minuten onder in hun enthousiasmerende wereld. De combinatie van verschillende disciplines biedt bijzondere cross-over inzichten waarbij er per avond één thematiek centraal staat.

Omdat het nu eenmaal beter luisteren en kijken is met een niet rammelende maag staat er bij binnenkomst een kop Marokaanse linzensoep, brood met Hummus en gegrilde groenten voor je klaar. De prijs van dit lekkers is inbegrepen in de prijs van het toegangskaartje.

editie #1 New Perspectives on Space

De eerste avond van deze nieuwe serie titelt New Perspectives on Space en gaat dieper in op kosmische ruimte-ethiek, ondergrondse ecosystemen, herdefiniëren van openbare gebouwen en toekomstige ruimtes. 

Sammia Elbakry (zij/haar) is gespecialiseerd in internationaal ruimterecht. Ze werkt als als docent aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Ze doet onderzoek naar de ethische vragen rond eigendom in de kosmische ruimte en commerciële winsten van kosmische ruimteactiviteiten in relatie tot verdeling van wereldwijde rijkdom.

Dr. Vasilis Kokkoris (hij/hem) ontving zijn PhD van de Universiteit van British Columbia (UBC) over microben ecologie en rondde zijn postdoctoraal research af aan de Universiteit van Ottowa en de Agriculture/Agri-Food Canada. Hij werkt op dit moment als assistent professor aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Zijn werk draait om microben ecologie en genetica, specifiek gefocust op één van de meest verspreide symbiotische organismen op deze planeet genaamd mycorrhizal fungi.

Hannah Schubert (zij/haar) is een landschapsarchitecte en onderzoeker, gespecialiseerd in het zoeken naar een nieuwe balans tussen mens en natuur. Haar project Second Nature is haar zoektocht naar het begrijpen van transformaties van gebouwen, door een geleidelijk verval toe te laten als alternatief voor sloop. Hierdoor ontstaat een nieuwe realiteit, een hybride tussen architectuur en natuur.

Charlotte Gillain (zij/haar) en Zak Lennard (hij/hem) werken momenteel aan (portraits of my) holocene holiday. Een reeks mixed-reality portretten/videowerken die de dichotomie van menselijke intimiteit en vrijetijdsbesteding binnen de context van milieuverval willen uitdrukken. In (portraits of my) holocene holiday wordt de kijker ondergedompeld in een speculatieve realiteit ten tijde van holoceen uitsterven.

Curated and moderated by performer and theatre-maker Nick Deroo (he/him), A Night of Inspiration combines inspirational talks with a cosy living-room atmosphere and delicious food, allowing you to explore a universe of possibility from the comfort of your couch.

Selected for their originality, passion and excellence, each speaker will immerse you for 15 minutes in their world, offering you a rare, cross-disciplinary insight into the evening’s theme. With access points across cultures, professions and interests, there’s something for everyone.

edition #1 New Perspectives on Space

The first evening of this new series is titled New Perspectives on Space and will explore cosmic ethics, underground ecosystems, repurposed architecture and imagined future spaces.

Sammia Elbakry (she/her) specializes in international space law. She currently works as a lecturer at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Free University Amsterdam). She is busy with the ethical questions that touch upon topics such as property claims in outer space and commercial profits from space activities in relation to global wealth distribution.

Dr. Vasilis Kokkoris (he/him) received his PhD from the University of British Columbia (UBC) on microbial ecology, and completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Ottawa and at Agriculture/Agri-Food Canada, and is currently working as an assistant professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Hannah Schubert (she/her) is a landscape architect and researcher, who specializes in finding a new balance between man and nature. Her project Second Nature is her quest on understanding the transformations of buildings, by allowing a gradual decay as an alternative to demolition. With this, a new reality takes shape, a hybrid between architecture and nature.

Artists Charlotte Gillain (she/her) and Zak Lennard (he/him) are currently working on (portraits of my) holocene holiday.  A series of mixed-reality portraits/slice-of-life performances that aim to express the dichotomy of human intimacy and relaxation within the context of environmental decay - broadening the viewer's sense of what it feels like to exist in a time of Holocene extinction.
