Hoe beïnvloedt je omgeving wie je mag zijn? Sunni Lamin Barrow neemt je mee naar zijn jeugd en deelt de verhalen en gedichten die hij maakte over die tijd, beïnvloed door de angst voor straf en uitsluiting die op LGBTQ+-uitingen bestaan in zijn moederland. A Fist of Tongues is een poëtische performance waarin Sunni de verschillende stadia van zijn leven onderzoekt sinds hij uit Gambia vluchtte. In deze performance, waarin storytelling samenvloeit met visuals, soundesign en dans, getuigt Sunni over hoe het is om te leven als Afrikaanse queer persoon, en over de beslissende invloed die ouders kunnen hebben op hoe je je ontwikkelt.

Spoken word artist Sunni Lamin Barrow takes you to different stages of a journey he made himself: his flight from Gambia to the Netherlands because of his sexual orientation. How does your environment influence who you are?
Sunni Lamin Barrow takes you back to his youth and shares the stories and poems he wrote about that time, influenced by the fear of punishment and exclusion that exist for LGBTQ+ expressions in his motherland. A Fist of Tongues is a poetic performance in which Sunni explores the different stages of his life since fleeing Gambia. In this performance, in which storytelling merges with visuals, sound design and dance, Sunni testifies about what it is like to live as an African queer person, and about the decisive influence of one’s parents.

Sunni Lamin Barrow (1998), geboren in Gambia en op 24 februari 2020 naar Nederland verhuisd, is een opkomende naam in het Nederlandse poëziecircuit. Na zijn jaren als spoken word-artiest, verkent hij nu nieuwe theatrale hybriden in zijn artistieke carrière. Sunni schrijft in droomtalen en zijn werken zijn grotendeels geïnspireerd door zijn Gambiaanse achtergrond, gesprekken over identiteit en zelfbehoud en wat het betekent om een wereldburger te zijn.
Nadat hij als queer-immigrant zelfstandig naar Nederland is verhuisd, neemt Sunni zijn publiek mee naar zijn jeugd en deelt hij de artistieke werken die hij heeft gemaakt en gedocumenteerd over die tijd, beïnvloed door de angst voor straf en uitsluiting die op LGBTQ+-uitingen bestaan in zijn moederland.
Sunni werkt o.a. voor Unwanted Words, Het Zwarte Schaap, en speelt in o.a. in het Huis Marseille, Van Gogh Museum, Fashion for Good Museum , Museumnacht in de Oude Kerk, Oerol, Haags Historisch Museum, We the People Amsterdam, Formation Now (Hamburg, Duitsland), Trill (Leuven, België), Lombok International Poetry Festival.
