MOTHS TO THE FLAME balanceert tussen concert, performance en ritueel: een vrije val op het snijvlak van extase, melancholie en totale verdwijning. Een ode aan de glorieuze ondergang. Opdat wij nooit vergeten worden. Een laatste dans voordat alles wordt opgeslokt.

Nachtmotten maakt persoonlijke, rauwe voorstellingen waarin muziek, performance, beeldende kunst en theater samenkomen. Met een kritische en ironische blik onderzoekt het collectief de verschuivende verhoudingen tussen kunstenaar, publiek en samenleving. MOTHS TO THE FLAME is deel van een meerjarig onderzoek van het collectief over eigenaarschap en artistieke macht.

Voorafgaand aan het maakproces gaf Nachtmotten het publiek de macht over de voorstelling. Via inzendingen bepaalden zij de inhoud; bijvoorbeeld een tekst, handeling, lied, kostuum of decorstuk. Hiermee onderzocht Nachtmotten wat er gebeurt als iedereen een stem krijgt. Ontstaat er een rooskleurige utopie, of mondt het uit in chaotische anarchie? En wie is eigenlijk eigenaar van dit stuk?

In a space capsule that has gone out of orbit, three astronauts drift weightlessly towards a black hole. The earth beneath them is on fire: political unrest, civil wars and climate disastersmake the return journey impossible. The end seems inevitable. With screaming guitars, pounding beats and hallucinatory soundscapes, they search for meaning right before they vanish.

MOTHS TO THE FLAME veers between concert, performance and ritual: a freefall at the intersection of ecstasy, melancholy and total disappearance. An ode to glorious demise. Lest we are forgotten. A final dance before everything is swallowed.

Nachtmotten creates personal, raw performances that merge music, visual art and theatre. The collective explores the shifting relationships between artists, audience and society. MOTHS TO THE FLAME is part of the collective's multi-year research on ownership and artistic power. Prior to the creative process, Nachtmotten gave the audience control over the show.

Through submissions, they determined the content; for example, a text, action, song, costume or set piece. Through this process, Nachtmotten explored what happens when everyone is given a voice. Does it lead to a rose-tinted utopia, or turn into chaotic anarchy?
