BYGONES

Riemen vast voor het spetterende danstheater van Out Innerspace Dance Theatre, een opwindend hedendaags dansgezelschap uit Vancouver. Je wordt meegezogen in een fantasiewereld van illusies van het soort ‘hoe-kán-dit?’. Belichting en videoprojecties creëren muren van licht, of schaduwen om door te worden opgeslokt of juist aan te ontsnappen. 
 
Vijf dansers zitten gevangen in een duister tijd-ruimtevacuüm, ontdaan van alle wetten en logica. Ze worden voortgestuwd door zichtbare en onzichtbare krachten. Steeds opnieuw raakt hun wereld uit zijn voegen. En als er iets van onder controle lijkt, spat het hele zooitje weer uit elkaar. Geen grond is vast, letterlijk – soms bevriezen de dansers horizontaal in het luchtledige, terwijl de hemel begint te grommen en zelfs het gezellige theehoekje vervaarlijk aan het rammelen slaat. 
 
Bygones betekent zoiets als ‘gedane zaken’ en daarvan weten we: die nemen geen keer. Alle verkeerde afslagen, onoverwonnen angsten en niet uitgekomen dromen uit ons verleden nemen we mee de toekomst in. Die blijven ons op de hielen zitten, zoals de choreografen David Raymond en Tiffany Tregarthen tonen in een stroom aan bezeten beelden. Toch is er ook plaats voor hoopvolle verwachting. Want we zijn als mens toch zeker krachtig genoeg om zelf onze toekomst in te kleuren?  
 
‘Onze levens worden gestuurd door verandering, en toch houden we graag vast aan het oude, het bekende’, aldus de makers. ‘Het kan voelen alsof de veranderingen te snel gaan, of juist alsof we vastzitten in een patroon. Verandering brengt ons kompas in de war. Die desoriëntatie krijgt vorm in het beeld van onophoudelijk vallen. Niets is krachtiger dan de hoop op betere tijden.’  
 
Raymond en Tregarthen zijn als dansers verbonden aan Kidd Pivot, het beroemde Canadese dansgezelschap van choreograaf Crystal Pite. In Bygones zie je invloeden terug van haar Revisor (ITA, 2022) en Betroffenheit (Julidans, 2017). Wat stevige beeldtaal en ultravirtuoze dans betreft doet Bygones er zeker niet voor onder. Hun talent als maker is in Nederland niet onopgemerkt gebleven: het choreografenduo heeft afgelopen april hun debuut gemaakt bij NDT II.

A nightmare vision that goes totally berserk. Like a David Lynch film on speed. Dancers who defy gravity. Books, teacups and flower pots lead a life of their own, mysterious creatures creep out of the shadows. Welcome to the hallucinatory universe of Bygones by Canadian choreographers David Raymond and Tiffany Tregarthen. With special effects and illusionary tricks that make your mouth water. 
 
Buckle up for the dazzling dance theatre of Out Innerspace Dance Theatre, an exciting contemporary dance company from Vancouver. You are sucked into a fantasy world of illusions of the "how-can-this-be?" variety. Lighting and video projections create walls of light, or shadows to be engulfed by or to escape from. 
 
Five dancers are trapped in a dark time-space vacuum, stripped of all laws and logic. They are propelled by visible and invisible forces. Again and again, their world comes apart at the seams. And when it seems to be under control, the whole thing comes crashing down again. No ground is solid, literally – sometimes the dancers freeze horizontally in a vacuum, while the sky begins to growl and even the cosy tea corner rattles dangerously. 
 
Bygones means something like "what's done" and we know that such things cannot be undone. We take all the wrong turns, unconquered fears and unfulfilled dreams from our past with us into the future. They continue to pursue us, as choreographers David Raymond and Tiffany Tregarthen show in a stream of obsessed images. Yet there is also room for hopeful expectations. After all, as human beings we are surely powerful enough to colour our own future?  
 
‘Our lives are driven by change, and yet we like to hold on to the old, the familiar,' the makers say. ‘Sometimes, it can feel as though the change creates an overwhelming momentum while also holding us captive or stuck in a pattern. In these ways, change might confuse our compass. This disorientation takes form in the work’s movement ideas as well as the production design. We are inspired by the power of the efforts and hope and for better times.’ 
 
As dancers, Raymond and Tregarthen are affiliated with Kidd Pivot, the famous Canadian dance company of choreographer Crystal Pite. In Bygones you can see influences from her Revisor (ITA, 2022) and Betroffenheit (Julidans, 2017). In terms of robust visual language and ultra-virtuoso dance, Bygones matches these works. Their talents as makers have not gone unnoticed in the Netherlands: the choreographer duo made their debut at NDT II last April.
