Still Life

Geïnspireerd door de radicale Japanse butoh-dans en de menselijke stem gaat Alan Lucien Øyen op zoek naar een verbinding met de wereld en pure menselijke expressie. Als een van de smaakmakers in de hedendaagse theaterdans in Europa brengt hij deze zoektocht tot leven door te verstillen en te vereenvoudigen, met medewerking van een Amsterdams zangkoor.

In Still Life onderzoekt choreograaf en theatermaker Alan Lucien Øyen met zijn gezelschap Winter Guests hoe we te midden van de razendsnelle ontwikkelingen van communicatiemiddelen, technologie en virtuele netwerken onze relatie met onszelf, met elkaar en met de levende wereld kunnen herstellen.

Øyen keert daarvoor terug naar de analoge zuiverheid van de natuurlijke wereld en verkent deze via dans, beweging en verstilling. Door middel van menselijke stemmen – gefluister, geneurie en gezongen harmonie van een Amsterdams koor – onderzoekt hij de essentie van menselijke expressie.

In Still Life worden de rollen vertolkt door Mirai Moriyama en Daniel Proietto, gespecialiseerd in de ultrafysieke en hyper-esthetische butoh-dansvorm, die ontstond als reactie op de atoombommen op Hiroshima en Nagasaki, waarbij de titel de dualiteit van leven en dood onderstreept. Øyen ziet die kern van butoh als metafoor voor onze tijd, waar de natuur sterft en wijzelf vastzitten in onze ‘stille levens’ – levend, maar stervend.

Øyen streeft naar de grootst mogelijke oprechtheid in een enscenering die, naar eigen zeggen, ‘zichzelf niet bedriegt’. Hij maakt gebruik van eenvoudige theatrale middelen, zoals geschilderde achtergronden van landschappen: een oceaan, een bos, of de natuur – zonder theatrale opsmuk.

Alan Lucien Øyen, een van de opmerkelijkste en toonaangevendste kunstenaars in Europa, staat bekend om zijn multidisciplinaire werken met een diepe emotionele, filmische en dramatische kracht, waarbij hij samenwerkt met gerenommeerde gezelschappen als het Nederlands Dans Theater, het Parijse Opera Ballet en Tanztheater Wuppertal.

Still Life

Inspired by radical Japanese butoh dance and the human voice, Alan Lucien Øyen goes in search of a connection to the world and pure human expression. One of the trendsetters in contemporary theatre dance in Europe, he brings this quest to life by growing still and simplifying, with the collaboration of an Amsterdam choir.

In Still Life, choreographer and theatre-maker Alan Lucien Øyen and his company Winter Guests explore how, amid the meteoric developments of communication tools, technology and virtual networks, we can restore our relationship with ourselves, with each other and with the living world.

To do so, Øyen returns to the analogue purity of the natural world and explores it through dance, movement and stillness. Through human voices – whispers, humming and harmonies sung by an Amsterdam choir – he explores the essence of human expression.

In Still Life, the roles are performed by Mirai Moriyama and Daniel Proietto, who specialise in the ultra-physical and hyper-aesthetic butoh dance form, that emerged in response to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, with the title underscoring the duality of life and death. Øyen sees that core of butoh as a metaphor for our times, where nature is dying and we ourselves are stuck in our 'still lives' – alive, but dying.

Øyen aims for the utmost sincerity in a staging that, in his own words ‘does not deceive itself’. He uses simple theatrical means, such as painted backgrounds of landscapes: an ocean, a forest, or nature – without theatrical trappings.
